Idea 1) Two best friends deal with a suicide. One of their (in the past) close friends commits suicide, when they haven't talked to him in many months. The friends deal with their issues of death, and their memories of the friend. They become even closer through this.
Idea 2) Middle school kids find a dead body outside the tennis courts before school. The man shot himself in the head. The kids deal with people asking them about it, and with having seen a dead body. Their tennis coach also dies in this same year. (I actually don't want to do this one, I just can't really think of other experiences I'd want to write about, more than this)
Idea 3) A bride and groom finally marry, after waiting seemingly forever. They deal with crazy family, the memories of their relationship so far, and thinking about the future. The couple thinks about how much things have changed since before they even knew each other. They celebrate their love. (Ok so I have been to a wedding, but the specific things I have in mind, haven't occurred yet)
Idea 4) A guy finds out he has a gift with children. He starts out very reluctant to be around kids, and hold them and pick them up, because it seems taboo. Eventually he realizes kids love him, and that he does very well with them. He struggles with himself, wanting to be able to spend time with children, and playing with them, but he knows how it looks, and he's afraid insinuations will be made at some point.

ReplyDeleteI feel like you have already put some pretty good thought into all of your ideas, and I love your third idea. I think this would be a good story that you could take in several different directions. I think this idea could evoke emotion in readers, as well as present some good opportunities for comedy, such as the crazy family or "bridezilla" aspect. A great idea!
Aj, I agree with Heather that you seem to have put a great amount of thought into each of your ideas. I personally like the first idea the most. (maybe because I can relate). In that story I think it would be interesting to have the two boys talking after his funeral and take the reader through some of the memories with the dead friend. Showing how they are dealing with the death and what made him a great friend. The second idea I like a lot but it might be hard to condense into a short story simply because there are so many different aspects and issues occurring at once. Be careful not to get caught up with all the aspects of the story and stay on what is important. I like that you put so much thought into these topics though! It shows that the wheels are already in motion. Good Job!

ReplyDeleteI really like idea number two (the one we discussed in class last Monday). Everyone seemed very interested in this story idea partially because you can come up with many conflicts resulting in the death. You can add whatever twists and attitudes for the characters. It calls for a good story! You put a lot of thought into all four of your short story ideas and it shows! Great work!

I think the 4th could be kind of funny - like a child in a man's body - or really sad and difficult with town talk, the man being jailed, etc. All great ideas though.
